Do You Have a Skincare Regimen?

Surprisingly, about half of my clients lack a skincare regimen. Yet this daily practice protects and nourishes the skin. It’s not just for aesthetics either, a regimen can protect you from the damage caused by environmental toxins and UV rays.

Regular skincare is as important as brushing your teeth, and both practices should be considered a basic daily habit. Just as regular dental hygiene protects teeth and gums, regular skincare results in attractive, healthy looking skin.

Here’s the thing, I’m always taken aback when people tell me I have great skin.

As a teenager, my reflection in the mirror resembled some kind of lunar surface, a changing landscape of puffy peaks and scary craters. Back then I was incredibly envious of friends with clear skin and always thought that physical beauty was epitomized in this single quality, regardless of bone structure or facial symmetry. Clear, smooth skin was my goal, and even though it felt tragically illusive, I diligently persisted.

I would place my hope in new products and loyally applied the anti-bacterial, tinted liquids that promised to clear up the mess, while simultaneously disguising it! These efforts transformed over the years, but inevitably it became a habit, and before I even had the language to describe it, I had developed a “Skincare Regimen!”

Of course, I remained envious of those friends and colleagues who could roll out of bed, swipe on a coat of mascara and go to the office. They looked at me sideways when I spent my money on skincare products, as if I was a little loopy. But now, decades later, they ask me what I do to keep my skin looking so nice! I do a double take, and look around. Are you talking to me?

It does not, however, require close inspection to see that, over the years, my skin has held up pretty well, while theirs has, shall we say, not fared as well.

Here’s what I tell all my clients:

It’s never too late to start a skincare regimen! Regardless of when you start, it will make a real and visible difference!

Just start with the basics: Cleanse away dead cells, makeup and pollution; Moisturize to hydrate and feed your cells; Apply sunscreen to protect and shield.

It’s that simple!

Studies show that we’re more successful at sticking with new habits if we link them with existing ones. So if you’re starting a new skincare regimen, go back to that other daily habit you would never skip; brushing your teeth! Every morning and night, after brushing your teeth, practice cleansing and hydrating your skin!

While it’s my mission to use all the tools at my disposal to help repair and replenish your skin, there’s a lot that you can accomplish with these simple practices in your own home.
