As it turns out, many of their discoveries laid the foundation for treatments we still use today. Modern chemical peels may seem like a recent innovation, but their origins stretch back much further than most people realize.

Recipes for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation appear in Egyptian papyrus texts nearly 4,000 years old. Most of us have heard of Cleopatra’s famous milk baths. Did you know they required soured milk from 700 donkeys every single day?

Ancient Egyptians also used powdered alabaster, animal oils, salt, and honey to care for their skin. The Greeks and Romans experimented with fermented grape juice and fruit extracts. During the Middle Ages, Europeans turned to mustard, sulfur, limestone, and vinegar poultices to achieve similar effects.

And how could we forget Madame Pompadour, the chief mistress of King Louis XV? She famously soaked in luxurious baths filled with wine. These ancient civilizations discovered that food-based ingredients benefited the skin, even if they didn’t understand why.

The Science Behind Ancient Treatments

Today we know what they couldn’t have known centuries ago. Sour milk contains natural lactic acid, while fermented grapes produce tartaric acid. Citrus fruits and apples contain their own naturally occurring fruit acids.

These ingredients gently exfoliate the skin by helping remove old surface cells. That process encourages fresher, healthier-looking skin underneath. In many ways, the earliest skincare treatments were surprisingly sophisticated.

This period marks what I like to call “Phase 1.” Ancient cultures relied on nature’s ingredients, and many of those ingredients continue to inspire skincare today.

Phase 2: The Rise of Chemistry

Now we move into Phase 2. Brace yourself. We’ve entered the fascinating world of chemistry.

During the 1870s and 1880s, medical professionals began experimenting with stronger chemical solutions. A variety of acids were tested for treating damaged skin. By World War I, battlefield surgeons were using phenol beneath bandages to help treat wounds.

Eventually, surgeons developed better techniques for treating facial injuries. As is often the case, those medical advances helped pave the way for modern cosmetic surgery. That, however, is a story for another day.

While these stronger chemical treatments demonstrated what was possible, they also revealed the importance of safety. Better results meant little if the treatment itself created lasting complications.

Fortunately, continued research eventually led to safer techniques and better patient outcomes.

When Regulation Became Necessary

From the 1930s through the 1950s, “lay peelers” became increasingly common. These individuals often applied harsh chemicals without medical training or proper oversight. Despite their lack of qualifications, many earned enormous amounts of money.

Unfortunately, the damage eventually became impossible to ignore. Poor technique and unsafe practices led to serious injuries for many patients. As public awareness grew, regulators began shutting many of these operations down.

The industry had reached an important turning point. Greater oversight would help pave the way for safer, more predictable treatments.

Phase 3: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science

Today, we’ve come almost full circle. Modern dermatology embraces many of the same principles discovered centuries ago, but now those principles are supported by decades of scientific research.

Cleopatra and Madame Pompadour unknowingly benefited from fermentation. Fermentation breaks complex botanical ingredients into simpler molecular structures, making active ingredients easier for the skin to absorb. That famous sour donkey milk was naturally rich in alpha hydroxy acids.
