From Summer Shine to Winter Dry: How Skin Changes

When we talk about “skin change,” most people typically think of aging skin or specific conditions, like acne or rosacea, that can progress or retreat with certain treatments. Aside from these situations, however, we tend to assume that our skin basically stays the same—that it’s some kind of consistent epidermal layer maintaining a static state all year round.

Fortunately, your skin is far more dynamic than that! It’s an incredible organ that interacts with and responds to its environment on a constant basis. It’s also a crucial part of your body’s system for maintaining homeostasis. As such, it responds not only to small, daily changes but also to larger, seasonal shifts.

Take “summer skin,” for example. In hot weather, your sebaceous glands secrete more oil. This helps prevent your skin—and therefore your body—from dehydrating. At first glance, this may sound counterintuitive. After all, why would your skin need extra hydration in humid conditions?

The answer lies in the fascinating complexity of your skin’s balancing act. Your glands respond to temperature by producing more sebum regardless of humidity. At the same time, your skin also produces sweat to cool the epidermis. Sweat cools most effectively when it spreads evenly across the skin rather than forming beads. Sebum acts as an emulsifier, providing the surface tension needed for sweat to distribute evenly, creating that “sweat sheen” that maximizes cooling. In other words, your skin is constantly balancing sweat evaporation (losing moisture) with oil production (retaining moisture) to keep you cool and hydrated.

Then the seasons change.

In colder months, the air holds less moisture. Dry air leads to dry skin. While your skin does try to produce oil to protect itself, the extreme dryness of winter air can damage the protective barrier (the stratum corneum). Once compromised, the barrier struggles to seal in moisture, leading to a cycle of dryness. Artificial heating indoors only worsens the situation, further reducing humidity levels.

This seasonal shift often leads to tight, flaky skin, inflammation, irritation, and even breakouts caused by clogged pores.

So, what can we do to prepare for the coming season?

At Kintsu Med Spa, we see firsthand how dramatically skin changes with the seasons—and how much better it performs with the right care. As we head into cooler months, here are my top tips:

  1. Switch to a Gentle Cleanser – Avoid foaming or stripping cleansers, which worsen dryness. Choose cream or oil-based options.
  2. Upgrade Your Moisturizer – Look for products rich in ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or peptides to strengthen your skin barrier.
  3. Don’t Forget SPF – UV rays are strong year-round. Daily sunscreen is essential for anti-aging and skin health.
  4. Use a Humidifier at Night – Adding moisture to your bedroom can reduce dehydration and irritation.
  5. Book Seasonal Treatments – Professional treatments like oxygen facials, VI Peels, and lasers help reset your skin, keeping it balanced and resilient through seasonal changes.

Taking these steps now sets your skin up for long-term health and natural, beautiful results—the signature approach we practice at Kintsu Med Spa! Visit us soon for your personalized skin plan.
